uneven ups and downs
with arbitrary curves
and, if lucky, perhaps
one elaborate plain
measured in decade laps
of heartbreak and satisfactions
diminishments accumulate
beyond mid-century years
hobbling, limping, stretcher-borne
all do reach the finish line.
