Companion to the grasslands
a once teeming surface
ocean-wide expanse
beyond conjurable limits
familiar silhouettes there
branching, stick-like cacti
occasional, abundant
with discrete separation
friendly sentries for many
on crisscrossing transits
and accidental witnesses
to the prairie's barbarous past.
