Hominid Beginnings

Hominids at the beginning
watched by wild African eyes
evolving best survival fit
with vast Serengeti’s plain
fertile, untamed, expansive
for grazers and stalking takers

upright, generic creatures
without giraffean neck
eagle eyes, bat-eared hearing
cheetah speed, elephant heft
or zebra’s camouflage cover
just crafty, ferocious lusts

witnesses with conscious ken
sitting beneath acacia shade
separate from passing parade
alone knowing the paradox
ecstasy, sadness, evil, good
in Eden’s garden of choices.
